ROPA Method for Female Couples: Shared Motherhood

With the ROPA Method, female couples can experience shared motherhood: one partner provides the eggs, while the other carries the pregnancy. A family project that begins together from the very first moment.

At GAIA Fertility Clinic, we support you with a specialized assisted reproduction team for female couples, offering a close, safe, and personalized approach.

What Is the ROPA Method (Reception of Oocytes from the Partner)?

The ROPA Method (Reception of Oocytes from the Partner) is an in vitro fertilization (IVF) technique designed for female couples who wish to experience motherhood together.

It allows one woman to provide the eggs while the other carries the pregnancy, creating both a biological and emotional connection from the very beginning. After fertilization in the laboratory, the resulting embryos are transferred into the uterus of the gestational partner, who will carry the pregnancy.

In this way, the ROPA Method enables shared motherhood, in which both women participate actively and complementarily in the reproductive process.

In Spain, the ROPA Method is a legal option for married female couples, allowing both partners to be legally recognized as mothers from birth.
For this reason, it is one of the most commonly chosen fertility treatments for female couples wishing to build their family together.

How Do DNA and Epigenetics Work in the ROPA Method?

In the ROPA Method, one woman contributes the genetic material (DNA) through her eggs, while the other provides the gestational environment.

During pregnancy, the uterus, blood supply, and hormonal environment influence the expression of the embryo’s genes through mechanisms of epigenetics. This means that both women participate biologically in the baby’s development, reinforcing the shared and deeply emotional nature of this treatment.

When Is the ROPA Method Recommended?

Every couple is unique. At Gaia Fertility Clinic, we carry out an individualised assessment to determine whether the ROPA Method is the most suitable option for you both.

Female couples who wish to share motherhood from both a biological and emotional perspective.

Couples in which one woman has better egg quality while the other has more favorable uterine conditions for pregnancy.

How Is the Donor Selected?

Hombre realizándose pruebas de fertilidad masculina

In Spain, sperm donation is anonymous and legally regulated.
The donor is selected through an accredited sperm bank, following strict medical and compatibility criteria.

Physical characteristics such as blood type, eye color, skin tone, and body type are considered to maintain the closest possible resemblance to the couple.
Additionally, genetic testing and comprehensive medical screening are performed to guarantee treatment safety.

At our clinic, we work with specialized laboratories and certified sperm banks, ensuring a rigorous clinical process that prioritizes both health and peace of mind.
Our team will explain every step during your consultation so that you can make decisions with complete confidence.

ROPA Method Success Rates

How Is the ROPA Method (Partner Egg Reception / IVF-ROPA) Performed?

At GAIA Fertility Clinic, we begin with a detailed and supportive medical consultation, carrying out a complete assessment of both women.
We evaluate medical, reproductive, and personal factors together to define each partner’s role within treatment, always adapting the process to your needs and wishes.

The woman providing the eggs begins a personalized ovarian stimulation protocol, designed to obtain the highest possible number of eggs under optimal conditions.
During this stage, regular ultrasound monitoring is performed to adjust treatment precisely and safely.

Egg retrieval is a brief and safe procedure performed under sedation.
It allows eggs to be collected comfortably and without pain, ready for fertilization in the laboratory.

The retrieved eggs are fertilized through IVF/ICSI using donor sperm and cultured in our laboratory until the blastocyst stage (day 5).
Embryos with the best developmental potential are selected.

Embryo transfer is performed in the receiving partner’s uterus.
It is a simple, painless, outpatient procedure, carried out in a calm and caring environment, with particular attention to the couple’s emotional well-being.

Approximately 10 days after embryo transfer, a blood pregnancy test (β-hCG) is performed.
If the result is positive, follow-up ultrasound scans are scheduled to confirm the healthy progression of pregnancy before care is transferred to your regular specialist.

ROPA Method: Cost and Financing

The ROPA Method (Reception of Oocytes from the Partner) is an assisted reproduction treatment specific for female couples, and its cost depends on several medical and technical factors.

As it is a highly personalized treatment, there is no standard fee; since elements such as ovarian stimulation, in vitro fertilization, and required complementary tests all influence pricing.

At Gaia Fertility Clinic, we understand that the ROPA Method it is much more than a medical treatment. It is a shared life project.
For this reason, we carry out an individualised assessment of both partners to define the most suitable and safest protocol for each case.
Once the medical assessment has been completed, we provide a clear and personalized quote, explaining every stage of treatment in full detail.

Frequently Asked Questions About the ROPA Method

The answers to these frequently asked questions have been prepared by the editorial team at GAIA Fertility Clinic and medically reviewed by Dr. Grether Pérez to ensure the information is accurate, up to date, and based on scientific evidence.

The ROPA Method usually takes between 4 and 6 weeks, from the beginning of treatment to embryo transfer. This includes:

  • Ovarian stimulation.
  • Egg retrieval.
  • Fertilization and embryo culture.
  • Preparation of the receiving partner’s uterus.

Approximately 10 days after transfer, the pregnancy test is performed.
The exact timeline may vary depending on each woman’s response and the medical protocol used.

To undergo the ROPA Method, both women must meet a series of medical and legal requirements to ensure treatment safety and the best chances of success.
Generally, they must:

  • Be adults and form a female couple.
  • Undergo a complete medical assessment, including gynecological, hormonal, and blood testing.
  • Ensure that the woman providing the eggs has an adequate ovarian reserve.
  • Ensure that the receiving partner has a healthy uterus suitable for pregnancy.
  • Comply with Spanish legal requirements, including informed consent from both partners.

The decision is always made by the couple, following a complete medical evaluation.
At Gaia Fertility Clinic, we perform an individualised assessment of both women, considering ovarian reserve, uterine health, and other clinical factors, before guiding you toward the option with the highest probability of success.

Our role is to advise based on medical criteria; the final decision is made jointly, with full information and respect for the couple’s wishes.
At Gaia Fertility, every case is evaluated individually, because beyond general requirements, what matters most is defining the best treatment for each couple.

In Spain, the law recognizes both women in the couple as the child’s legal mothers, provided the pregnancy was achieved through the ROPA Method and the couple is legally married at the time of treatment.
From birth, the baby is legally registered as the child of both mothers, without the need for adoption or additional legal procedures.

This legal framework provides security for the family and guarantees the child’s rights from the very beginning.

At Gaia Fertility Clinic, the ROPA Method is more than a fertility treatment. It is a unique and emotionally meaningful way to share motherhood from the very beginning.
We will be here to support you every step of the way, with respect, warmth, and all our experience.
